STEM Outreach

Over the past 20 years we have founded, supported, and participated in several Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) outreach projects. Please contact Cheryl if she may be of service to assist you with your events or helping you to spread the word about STEM careers.

Helping students, parents, and teachers to understand STEM fields and career pathways is important. Not all people are interested in STEM careers, but if you don't know about them how do you know? The more our kids know, the more informed their decisions.

6th Grade Girls STEM Workshop

Founded in 2006.

Founding member, 6th grade girls STEM workshop hosting ~700 girls each year. Cheryl remains on the planning board and conducts a workshop each year.

In 2016 the workshop model was used by UVA-Wise to host a girls 6th grade STEM workshop.

In 2017 we are expanding again for SWCC to host a workshop for their surrounding counties.

Building a Composite Aerospace Component

This workshop evolved from a fundamentals of and repair of composite components taught to US Navy Enlisted personnel by Cheryl. The workshop is tailorable for participant age, workshop length, and outcomes.

First Robotics

We are active supports of the FIRST series of events; FLL, FTC, and FRC.

Since the initial Southwest VIrginia Regional FLL tournament (2010), we have had a combination of leadership and participatory roles for the suite of First events.

We are pleased to support FIRST's mission, "to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators, by engaging them in exciting Mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership."
